Green hydrogen is hydrogen gas produced through electrolysis of water using 100% renewable energy. It’s crucial for Kenya as it leverages our abundant renewable resources, supports industrial decarbonization, creates economic opportunities, and positions Kenya as a regional clean energy leader while meeting our climate commitments.

Q2: What is Kenya's Green Hydrogen Strategy?

The Kenya Green Hydrogen Strategy and Roadmap 2023-2032 is our 10-year plan to develop a green hydrogen economy. It focuses on creating domestic demand (starting with fertilizer production), building infrastructure, developing regulations, and expanding to sectors like steel, aviation, and shipping.

Q3: What is the current status of green hydrogen projects in Kenya?

Kenya has operationalized Africa’s first commercial green ammonia plant and has several projects in development. We’re actively working on regulatory frameworks and international partnerships to accelerate implementation across various sectors.

Q4: How can companies participate in green hydrogen projects?

Companies can submit Expressions of Interest through the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, partner with existing projects, invest in research and development, or engage in the value chain through equipment supply, technology development, or off-take agreements.

Q5: How is green hydrogen produced and what infrastructure is needed?

Green hydrogen is produced through electrolysis using renewable electricity to split water molecules. Required infrastructure includes electrolyzers, renewable power plants, compression/storage facilities, transportation systems, and end-use equipment adapted for hydrogen applications.

Q6: What are the environmental benefits of green hydrogen?

Green hydrogen reduces greenhouse gas emissions, improves air quality, supports renewable energy integration, enables energy storage, and provides a clean alternative to fossil fuels in hard-to-decarbonize sectors like industry and heavy transport.

WiGH Kenya promotes gender equality in the green hydrogen sector through networking, capacity building, mentorship, and creating equal opportunities. Women can join the database, participate in training, and engage in this emerging industry.
